Taxi near me in Mauritius: how to get a ride in your town

Woman with shopping bags getting into a white DodoGo taxi on a city street in Mauritius

In short:

  • “Taxi near me” means several different problems here. In central Port Louis a car is two steps away. In a residential lane after six in the evening, nobody is passing.
  • With an app you don’t need a stand. You drop a pin where you are standing.
  • Pick-up time depends on the area, the hour and the weather. In the rain and at peak hours, allow a margin.
  • Shopping, children or a group? Choose the vehicle class before you book.

You leave the office in Ebène at seven in the evening. The bus has just gone, the metro has closed, and it starts to rain. You type “taxi near me” into your phone. The answer depends on where exactly you are standing. In a town centre you can see a car from the window. Two kilometres off the main road you can wait half an hour and still see no car. Here is how to find a taxi near me in Mauritius, town by town. And what to do with no stand and no passing car.

What “a taxi near me in Mauritius” really means

There are four ways to leave, each for a different situation.

The taxi stand. Cars wait in town centres, at bus stations, markets, hospitals and shopping centres. Useful if you are right there in the daytime.

Flagging one down. Taxis pass along the main roads all day. But the fare is settled through a wound-down window. It depends on your mood and on where the driver was heading anyway.

Calling a driver you know. Reliable until the moment he is busy or gone to the airport for the day.

The app. The only option that does not depend on a stand. You show where you are, and the car comes to you.

The difference is not only convenience. At a stand or in a street car the fare is agreed on the spot. Nothing to compare it against.

We compare the options in our guide to the top 5 taxi apps in Mauritius.

When there is no taxi stand nearby

Drop a pin on the map and the stand stops mattering. Some places defeat the “just catch a car” approach:

  • residential lanes away from the main road;
  • business parks and industrial zones after working hours;
  • villages with one taxi, and it is at a wedding;
  • beaches and parks on a weekday;
  • hospitals and clinics late in the evening;
  • anywhere at all in the rain, when every car is already taken.

What helps in practice:

  1. A pin beats an address. Street names on the map may differ from the sign. The pin brings the driver exactly to where you stand.
  2. Add a landmark. The shop on the corner, a temple, a school, a petrol station. Enough to stop the driver circling.
  3. Choose a spot where a car can stop. Not a narrow lane with a drain, but a junction or a gateway.
  4. Wait indoors. You can see the car approaching on the map. Step out just as it arrives.

Dropping the pin and tracking the car both appear in our DodoGo taxi app review.

Town by town: what to keep in mind

A taxi near me in Mauritius means something different in each town. In one town it is traffic. In another, distance. On the coast, the shift patterns. A short cheat sheet:

Town When leaving gets harder What helps
Port Louis In the evening, when the offices and shops close and the centre empties Book before you leave the building; set the pin on an exact entrance or junction
Curepipe In the rain, and at the hours when parents collect children from school Remember the distances: beaches and the airport are far from here
Quatre Bornes and Rose Hill On market days and at the end of the working day, when everyone heads home Count traffic, not kilometres: at peak hours the journey time doubles
Goodlands Late in the evening, after a shift at a hotel or restaurant on the coast Don’t leave the journey home until the last minute
Mahébourg Around arrivals and departures, when local cars are busy on transfers Allow extra time for a trip to Port Louis or the plateau

Evenings, nights and weekends

After eight in the evening there is little alternative to a taxi. Buses and the metro have finished by then, and there are no night services. The very latest hours are covered in our Mauritius airport late night arrival guide.

On Sundays and public holidays the timetable is reduced. The first bus leaves later and the last one earlier than usual. The Rose Hill – Ebène – Réduit metro line does not run on Sundays at all. For anyone on that axis, Sunday starts with no transport.

Where both lines go and what changes on Sundays is covered separately: metro in Mauritius.

So a whole set of ordinary situations comes down to a taxi:

  • the shift ends at nine in the evening;
  • dinner at the relatives’ runs long;
  • the film finishes after ten;
  • a child falls ill at night and needs the clinic;
  • someone has to reach the airport early on a Sunday.

An app knows nothing about timetables. DodoGo takes bookings round the clock and across the island. At one in the morning in Curepipe, or six in the morning in Goodlands.

How long you will wait

Nobody can promise an exact pick-up time. It comes down to four things.

  • The area. Town centres and main roads have more cars than villages.
  • The hour. Morning and evening peaks, lunchtime near the schools, Friday evening. Demand runs higher than usual.
  • The weather. Rain on the plateau almost always brings a surge in bookings.
  • Events. Holidays, football, weddings, the end of the month. Cars get taken faster.

Your own side of it is small, but it works:

  1. Book a few minutes before you are ready to leave, not after.
  2. Set the pin precisely and keep your phone to hand. If the driver cannot reach you, he will call.
  3. Travelling to a fixed time, such as a flight or a doctor’s appointment? Add a margin for traffic.
  4. A big shopping centre or hospital has several entrances. “I’m at the entrance” can mean anything, so agree the spot in advance.

With shopping, children or a group

Choose the vehicle class for the job, not out of habit. DodoGo has four classes, from economy to a 14-seater bus. A pushchair, the week’s shopping or a wedding party all fit. The differences are set out in our guide to the best taxi service in Mauritius.

With heavy bags, set the pin at the shop exit. Not the far end of the car park. Travelling as a group? Agree who books, so you don’t end up with three rides for one group.

FAQ

How do I get a taxi where there is no stand nearby?

Through the app. You drop the pick-up pin where you are standing. The car comes to you.

Do taxis run at night?

Yes. DodoGo takes bookings round the clock and across the whole island. Small towns and villages included.

How much will the trip cost?

It depends on the route and the vehicle class. The app shows the full price before you confirm the booking.

What if the driver cannot reach my house?

Name the nearest landmark: a junction, a shop, a temple, a petrol station. Walk out to it. In narrow lanes that is quicker than explaining the way on the phone.

The short version

A taxi near me in Mauritius is not solved by finding the nearest stand. The car comes to where you are standing instead. Even if it is a lane no taxi ever enters by itself. And the hour when the buses have stopped.

Install the DodoGo app in advance, while you are not in a hurry. Get it for iPhone or Android. Signing up at home takes a minute. On the evening you need a car right now, just drop the pin and confirm.
