Mauritius Airport Late Night Arrival: How to Reach Your Hotel After Midnight

Night exit from Mauritius airport: a couple with suitcases walking to a white taxi outside the terminal

In short:

  • A late night arrival at Mauritius airport is nothing unusual. Long-haul flights from Europe and the Gulf often land in the small hours. The airport handles them as it does daytime flights.
  • Public transport is out of the question at night. Buses stop in the evening, there are no night services, and no rail line reaches the airport.
  • That leaves three realistic options. A taxi from the desk in the arrivals hall, a pre-paid transfer from your hotel, or a car booked through an app.
  • A car can be booked from the arrivals hall itself, once your suitcases are on the trolley — at any hour.

You have booked a flight that lands at 01:00, and now you are wondering. What will be open? Who will drive you? Will you be stuck in an empty hall until morning? The short answer: a Mauritius airport late night arrival is routine here. The island is used to it. Still, a couple of decisions taken in advance will save you an hour of hassle. Here is how it works, step by step.

Is SSR Airport open at night?

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSR, Plaisance) sits in the south-east of the island, next to Mahébourg. Long-haul flights from Europe and the Gulf regularly touch down in the middle of the Mauritian night.

That means you will not be landing at a closed building. Passport control, baggage reclaim and customs are staffed for every flight. The arrivals hall is far from empty.

Do not expect a terminal as busy as by day: some shops, cafés and desks are closed. Your task is simple — clear the formalities, collect your suitcases and leave.

The main thing is that leaving at night is possible. Taxis run around the clock, and a car can be called from the arrivals hall.

Why the bus is not an option at night

No rail route serves the airport. The Metro Express links only the central corridor towns and closes around 19:00. The bus network also runs on a daytime timetable. That means roughly 05:30 to 20:00 in towns, and 06:30 to 18:30 in rural areas. The one late exception is the Port Louis – Curepipe line, which runs until about 23:00. Night services do not exist. Besides, reaching the northern resorts such as Grand Baie means changing buses. Doing that with suitcases, in the dark, after ten hours in the air is a bad idea.

A word about Uber. Since spring 2026 it does operate in Mauritius. However, it works differently: the app dispatches licensed local taxis rather than private drivers. For a night arrival another limit matters more. The fleet is standard saloon cars only, with no minivans and no guaranteed child seat. Availability also depends on the area and the hour. Arriving as a family of four with luggage, you may find nothing available. The full picture is in our article on whether Uber works in Mauritius and what the alternatives are.

The conclusion: at night the question is not “bus or taxi”, but “which taxi”.

Three ways to leave the airport after midnight

At night the choice comes down to three options. Here is how they differ:

Option What works What does not
A taxi from the desk in the arrivals hall Nothing to arrange in advance, and the desk follows the flight schedule Costs noticeably more than a car booked ahead. You learn the price on the spot, with nothing to compare it against
A transfer from your hotel or tour operator A driver waits with a sign, no negotiating Inflexible: a delayed flight means renegotiating the arrangement by message
Booking through an app The full fare is visible before you confirm and does not change afterwards. You book from the arrivals hall at any hour You order the car yourself, once the suitcases are on the trolley

That is how DodoGo works: around the clock, across the whole island, with licensed local drivers.

For a late night arrival the third option has a less obvious advantage. It is not tied to the time you entered when booking a month ago. You order the car when you are genuinely ready to go.

For an overview of all the options, see our complete guide to Mauritius airport transfers. The island’s other practicalities are covered in what to know before travelling to Mauritius.

If your flight is delayed

A delay of two or three hours ruins any pre-agreed transfer. The driver has left, the dispatcher is not answering, and there you are in the arrivals hall. Hence “land first, book second” for night flights.

The sequence is simple:

  1. Switch your phone on as soon as you land, while still on the aircraft.
  2. Clear passport control and wait for your luggage. This takes a noticeable amount of time, so there is no point booking a car earlier.
  3. Book a car from the arrivals hall. Set SSR Airport as the pick-up point and your hotel as the destination.

If a hotel arranged your ride, message them as soon as you hear about the delay. And keep a backup in mind: an app works regardless of when you actually touched down.

Arriving at night with children, luggage or a large group

A late arrival is exactly the case where the class of car deserves a conscious choice. DodoGo has four:

  • Economy — a comfortable option for one or two passengers with normal luggage.
  • Comfort — when you want more space after a long flight.
  • 6-seater — a family with children and suitcases.
  • 14-seater bus — a group, a wedding party, or friends arriving on the same flight.

At night, do not economise on the size of the car. Four suitcases and a sleepy child do not fit a compact saloon.

A quick word on safety at night

Mauritius is a calm destination, and a night drive from the airport is routine. The roads are clear, and drivers know the route by heart.

The basic rules are the same as anywhere. Only get into the car you booked, and keep valuables with you rather than in the boot. Also save your hotel address in Latin script beforehand, because at night that beats explaining with gestures. Useful emergency numbers are collected in our article on safety in Mauritius: the general number is 999.

FAQ: arriving in Mauritius at night

How do I get from Mauritius airport at night?

At night only taxis or a pre-booked transfer are available — there are no buses. You can leave at any hour. Taxis on the island run around the clock, and DodoGo takes bookings 24/7 across Mauritius.

Do buses run from the airport at night?

No. Buses run roughly from 05:30 to 20:00 in towns and from 06:30 to 18:30 in rural areas. Later on, only the Port Louis – Curepipe line operates, until about 23:00. At night it is a taxi or a transfer.

Which car should we take if four of us arrive with suitcases?

The 6-seater. After a long flight it pays to take a car with room to spare: four suitcases and a sleepy child do not fit a compact saloon. For a larger group there is the 14-seater bus.

What if my flight is delayed?

No problem: book the car after landing, once you have your luggage. An app is not tied to your original arrival time.

How long is the drive to the hotel at night?

It depends on the direction. Mahébourg and Blue Bay are minutes away. The east coast is under an hour. Le Morne takes more than an hour. Grand Baie is about an hour at night — the route is covered in our Mauritius airport to Grand Baie guide. The roads are clear at night, so the journey is normally quicker than by day.

What to do before you fly

A late night arrival stops being a problem once two things are settled in advance. Your hotel address to hand, and a clear way to call a car.

Install the DodoGo app while you are still at home — for iPhone or for Android. Signing up takes a couple of minutes. Those minutes are easier to find at home than in an arrivals hall at 2 a.m. Once you land, all that is left is to enter the route and confirm the booking.
