Mauritius Airport to Grand Baie: Taxi and Transfer Tips

A DodoGo driver holds the taxi door open for a couple with a suitcase on the coast road at Grand Baie

In brief:

  • SSR Airport sits in the south-east, Grand Baie in the north. Between them: about 70 km and roughly an hour.
  • One bottleneck: Port Louis. On weekdays the capital adds 20 to 40 minutes, morning and late afternoon.
  • There is no direct bus to Grand Baie. You change in Port Louis, and the last northbound bus leaves before evening flights land.
  • Long-haul flights from Europe and the Middle East arrive in the evening or at night. Public transport has stopped by then. Decide how you will travel before you fly.
  • Luggage decides the class of car as much as the number of passengers. Two large suitcases do not always fit into a compact saloon.

You have landed, cleared passport control and collected your bags. And you are 70 kilometres from your hotel, at the other end of the island. That is normal here. The airport is in the south-east, the resort north an hour away. Here is what the Mauritius airport to Grand Baie run looks like in practice. How long it takes, where you slow down, what the options are.

Mauritius airport to Grand Baie: how long does it take?

About an hour. The road distance is roughly 70 km. In quiet conditions the drive takes 55 to 70 minutes.

The spread comes from traffic. On weekdays the stretch near Port Louis adds 20 to 40 minutes. Rush hour runs roughly 07:30–09:30 and 16:00–18:30. The capital sits on the coast and the whole country commutes in. There is no way around it. Off-peak, at weekends and at night the drive takes what the map says.

If your flight lands in rush hour, allow an hour and a half. If it lands at night, an hour or slightly less.

What the drive is like

The route is simple and almost entirely on motorways. From the airport you join the M1, the island’s main axis. It runs from the south-east past Curepipe and the central plateau to Port Louis. In the capital the motorway comes out at the port. The M2 starts there — the northern road, about 23 km long. It runs through Pamplemousses straight to the coast.

Along the way: cane fields, mountains, plateau towns, then Port Louis and its cranes. The last fifteen minutes are the north: villages, temples, signs to the beaches. From Pamplemousses to Grand Baie it is another 10 km.

Only the end of the trip needs attention. The last kilometres run through the narrow streets of the village. Your driver needs an exact address or a pin on the map. A hotel name will not do: in Grand Baie two properties can share one.

Staying on the west coast instead of the north? That road works differently and skips Port Louis — see our guide mauritius airport to flic en flac.

Taxi or bus: how to get there

Two real options: a taxi, or a bus with a change in Port Louis. What separates them is luggage and landing time.

Taxi or transfer. The most direct option: you book the car from the arrivals hall. It takes you from the terminal to the hotel door, with luggage and no changes. A full breakdown of the options is in our Mauritius airport transfer guide.

Bus with a change. There is no direct service, and the scheme is fiddlier than it looks. Route 198 takes you from the airport to Port Louis in about 70 minutes. The bus arrives at Victoria Square in the south. Northbound buses leave from Immigration Square. You have to walk across the centre between them.

Route 215 then runs to Grand Baie in about 45 minutes, roughly every half hour. The last departure from Port Louis is around 17:00. So you must leave the airport by three in the afternoon. On Sundays the line does not run at all. A ticket on the airport bus costs around 30 rupees.

Cheap and workable if you land in the morning and travel light. With two suitcases, children or an afternoon landing, it falls apart. Timetables change, so check them locally.

What the trip costs

There is no fixed airport-to-north tariff on the island. The fare depends on the route and the class of car. In the DodoGo app the full price is visible before you confirm the booking. The total does not change, and no haggling with the driver after you get in.

Do not rely on figures from forums and old reviews. They go out of date within a season. Our guide to how much is a taxi in Mauritius covers island fares.

If your flight lands late or at night

Check your landing time in advance — everything else follows. Flights from Europe and the Middle East often land in the evening or at night. Buses have stopped by then. That leaves a taxi or a hotel transfer booked in advance. The taxi is the simplest: booking one from the arrivals hall takes a minute. Landing after midnight is covered in our Mauritius airport late night arrival guide.

At night the drive to Grand Baie is at its fastest: the road is empty. You book from the arrivals hall once your bags are with you. While you walk to the exit, the car pulls up at the terminal.

If your flight is delayed, nothing breaks. You call the car when you walk out, not on the flight’s original schedule.

Which car class to choose

On the run to Grand Baie, luggage decides. Two people with two large suitcases do not always fit into an Economy car. Especially with a pushchair, a board or a bag of diving gear on top.

So size the car up, not down. An hour with a suitcase on your knees is no fun. You pick the class when you book, together with the price. Our guide to the best airport taxi in Mauritius covers the classes in detail.
