In short:
- The metro in Mauritius is Metro Express: two lines along the central plateau. Around 30 km of track and 22 stations.
- The Rose Hill – Ebène – Réduit line does not run on Sundays or public holidays.
- Trains run from roughly 06:00 to 19:00. Public transport has no night service.
- The network reaches neither the airport nor the coast. The north, east and south are off it.
- Victoria is the interchange for south and west. Buses north and east leave from Immigration Square, which has no station.
You open a map of the island and see a metro line through the middle. It looks like the transport question is settled. Metro Express runs along the central plateau, in its own dedicated lane. But the metro in Mauritius covers that strip and nothing more. Below: where the lines reach, what changes on Sundays, and where you need a taxi.
Where the metro in Mauritius runs: two lines
The metro follows the central plateau: two lines, around 30 km of track, 22 stations. The first links Port Louis and Curepipe. It runs daily, through Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas-Phoenix. The second is shorter: Rose Hill – Ebène – Réduit. It links the Ebène business park and the university town of Réduit.
The capital has three stations: Port Louis Victoria, St Louis and Place d’Armes. Victoria shares a complex with Victoria Square bus station. Buses to the south and west leave from there. That covers Curepipe, Rose Hill, Flic en Flac, Mahébourg and line 198 from the airport. Routes north and east depart from Immigration Square instead. That means Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Goodlands, Pamplemousses, Flacq and line 215. There is no station there. Place d’Armes is a temporary station opposite the square of that name. The cruise terminal has no station either.
When the Rose Hill – Réduit line does not run
On Sundays, trains between Rose Hill, Ebène and Réduit do not run. That has been so since 2 November 2025. Since 15 August 2026 the line also closes on public holidays. The Port Louis – Curepipe line works as usual on those days.
The gap hurts anyone heading to Ebène or Réduit on a Sunday. We covered that Sunday gap in our guide to taxi near me in Mauritius. Not every timetable has caught up. Some guides and the operator’s own page still promise daily service. Check the day of the week before you leave.
Opening hours: roughly 06:00 to 19:00
Trains run from about six in the morning to seven at night. Treat that as a guide, not a timetable. Hours change, and the Metro Express operator publishes the current ones. Check with them before a late trip.
The evening matters more than the morning here. Around seven the network shuts, and town buses finish by about 20:00. The Port Louis – Curepipe corridor holds out longest, until about 23:00. No bus route runs through the night. Late hours are covered in our guide to a Mauritius airport late night arrival.
Where the metro in Mauritius will not help
The metro in Mauritius reaches neither the airport nor the coast. It follows the plateau’s urban strip and ends in Curepipe. The north, east and south stay outside it. Not one beach resort sits on a line.
For a traveller, that is the main limit. Hotels in Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Belle Mare and Le Morne sit off it. The airport run is road only, too. No rails were laid that way. The route is covered in our Mauritius airport transfer guide.
| Where you’re going | Metro | Taxi |
|---|---|---|
| Port Louis centre | Three stations, Victoria at the bus terminal | Shopping, evenings, Sundays, station to door |
| Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill | Port Louis – Curepipe line, daily | Rain on the plateau, late evening, luggage |
| Ebène, Réduit | Rose Hill – Réduit line, except Sundays and holidays | Sundays, public holidays, after 19:00 |
| SSR Airport | Doesn’t go | Always: straight from the terminal to your hotel, at any hour |
| Grand Baie and the north | No line | A direct road instead of changes, any day |
| Flic en Flac, Tamarin | Off the network | Even more so with children and suitcases |
| Belle Mare, east and south | No rails at all | The only direct way |
Rides inside the capital have their own guide: taxi in Port Louis.
How to travel where the metro ends
The metro carries you along the plateau, and there its job ends. A taxi covers the rest: the last stretch from the station to your door, the coast, the evening, the night. Beyond the Port Louis – Curepipe line, changes eat more time than the train saves.
A taxi in Mauritius is best booked before you leave the station. In the DodoGo app you drop a pin on the map for the pickup point. Put it at a specific entrance or junction. Typing an address is optional. You can watch the taxi on the map as it comes. There are four classes, from economy to a 14-seater for a big group.
Rush hours and Sundays: when the plan breaks
The capital jams roughly from 7:00 to 9:30 and from 16:00 to 18:30. Traffic is heavy everywhere in those windows, approaches to stations included. Set off after ten in the morning or before four in the afternoon.
Sunday breaks the schedule harder than traffic does. Buses run less often, the first one leaves later and the last one earlier. Line 215 to Grand Baie does not run at all that day. Plan the trip back on Sunday morning.
Questions and answers
Does the metro in Mauritius run on Sundays?
Partly. The Port Louis – Curepipe line runs daily, Sundays included. Service on the Rose Hill – Ebène – Réduit line stopped on Sundays on 2 November 2025, and on public holidays on 15 August 2026.
What time does the metro in Mauritius stop?
Around 19:00, with the first trains about 06:00. Town buses finish near 20:00, and there is no night service.
Does the metro go to Mauritius airport?
No. Metro Express does not reach SSR Airport. Bus line 198 runs from the airport to Victoria Square, and from there you change with your luggage. A taxi goes from the terminal straight to your hotel, at any hour.
Can I reach Grand Baie or Flic en Flac by metro?
No, the coast is not on the network. Bus line 215 links Port Louis and Grand Baie in about 30–45 minutes, but not on Sundays. Flic en Flac has direct line 123; from Tamarin you change. A taxi is the direct way on any day.
How do I get from Port Louis to Curepipe?
By metro, on the Port Louis – Curepipe line, daily through Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas-Phoenix. The bus on that route runs until about 23:00. In the evening and in the rain, a taxi is simpler.
What if the trains have already stopped?
Book a taxi in the app. DodoGo works around the clock, across the whole island. Drop the pickup pin at the station exit.
The metro covers exactly the strip it was built along, and no more. The train handles the plateau, a taxi takes the rest. Install DodoGo in advance: for iPhone or for Android. Then at a closed station on a Sunday evening, you just drop a pin.
