Someone close to you has been taken ill. If help is needed on the spot, you call an ambulance. If you have to get there yourself, the question is where. The island is small, but “the hospital in the centre” is not an address. Below are the hospitals and clinics in Mauritius. Where each one stands, which take emergency cases, when visitors are let in.
Hospitals and clinics in Mauritius: public and private
Medical care on the island is split into two networks. The public one rests on five regional hospitals. Private clinics stand in the centre, the capital, the north, the east and the west.
Below the regional hospitals sits a network of small centres. There are more than a hundred, but they do not take emergency cases. The regional hospital is the next level up.
Around 73 % of the population uses the public system at no end-user costs. That is the Ministry of Health’s own wording. Each regional hospital has a resuscitation unit beside its emergency department.
The large private clinics say they run emergency care around the clock, and each publishes its own visiting hours.
Public hospitals in Mauritius: where each one stands
Five regional hospitals cover five regions. They are the capital, the north, the east, the south and the centre. The emergency departments of all five take emergency cases. The visiting hours below follow the Ministry of Health visiting policy published on health.govmu.org.
| Hospital | Region | Visiting hours, Mon–Sat |
|---|---|---|
| Dr A. Gaffoor Jeetoo | Port Louis, capital | 06:30–07:00 and 15:30–17:00 |
| Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSRN) | Pamplemousses, north | 06:30–07:00 and 15:30–17:00 |
| Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) | Flacq, east | not listed in the policy |
| Jawaharlal Nehru | Rose Belle, south | 06:30–07:00 and 15:30–17:00 |
| Victoria | Candos, centre | 06:30–07:00 and 15:30–17:00 |
On Sundays and public holidays the morning window holds. The afternoon one moves to 12:00–14:30. Victoria Hospital in Candos covers the centre of the island. The eastern hospital is Sir Anerood Jugnauth in Flacq, opened in 2024. It has not reached the ministry’s table of hours yet.
Two district hospitals also work: New Souillac in Souillac and Mahebourg in the south-east. The west coast has the public Dr Yves Cantin in Grande Rivière Noire. Specialist hospitals include the psychiatric Brown Sequard in Beau Bassin. The eye hospital S. Bharati stands in Moka. A cardiac centre works at SSRN.

The clinic in Moka was once Apollo Bramwell, then Wellkin. Today it is C-Care Wellkin. C-Care Tamarin has no wards, and emergency care there runs around the clock. A patient who needs admission is transferred to Wellkin or Darné.
Intensive care keeps its own hours, and they are shorter. At C-Care Darné they are 10:00–11:00 and 19:00–20:00. Artemis has 10:00–11:00 and 18:00–19:00, City Clinic 09:00–10:00 and 16:00–17:00. Aegle Clinic gives 11:00–12:00.
Pharmacies on duty are covered in medical facilities and pharmacies on the island of Mauritius.
When visitors are let in
Public hospitals let visitors in twice a day. Half an hour in the morning, an hour and a half in the afternoon. On Sundays and holidays the afternoon window shifts. The exact hours are in the table above.
The morning window does not exist everywhere. It is open at Jeetoo, SSRN, Jawaharlal Nehru and Victoria. New Souillac and Mahebourg have no morning window at all. The same goes for Dr Yves Cantin and the specialist hospitals. Visitors come there in the afternoon.
A third window runs from 12:00 to 13:00. It is only for helping a patient eat, and only with the ward sister’s permission.
How many people are let in depends on the department. An ordinary ward takes two at the bedside, the emergency department two companions. Intensive care admits one visitor. Flowers, bags, food and drinks stay outside, and the phone goes off. At the psychiatric Brown Sequard visits happen in the afternoon only.
Newborn wards at the regional hospitals open at 10:00–11:00 and 14:00–15:00, the feeding times. Outpatient appointments take no more than two companions. A child of any age is let in if there is nobody to mind them.
These are the general rules. A department may keep different hours, so check on the spot.
Which hospital is nearest to your area
The nearest hospital in Mauritius depends on your side of the island. A private clinic is chosen by the nearest town.
| Region | Public hospital | Private clinics |
|---|---|---|
| North | SSRN in Pamplemousses | C-Care Grand Baie in Mont Choisy, Clinique du Nord in Baie du Tombeau |
| West | Dr Yves Cantin in Grande Rivière Noire | C-Care Tamarin in Tamarin, Artemis in Cascavelle |
| East | Sir Anerood Jugnauth in Flacq | Aegle Clinic in Central Flacq |
| South | Jawaharlal Nehru in Rose Belle, New Souillac in Souillac, Mahebourg | none |
| Centre and capital | Victoria in Candos, Jeetoo in Port Louis | C-Care Wellkin in Moka, C-Care Darné in Floréal, Clinique Ferrière and Artemis in Curepipe, City Clinic in Port Louis |
The west coast has no regional hospital of its own. It belongs to the Victoria zone in Candos. On the shore itself, though, the public Dr Yves Cantin works in Grande Rivière Noire.
Drive times to each of them are set out in driving times in Mauritius.
How to get to the hospital
People reach a hospital by taxi. The ambulance is 114, and the other numbers are gathered in Mauritius emergency numbers.
DodoGo works around the clock across the island. You set the pick-up point with a pin on the map. The address of the block does not matter. The map shows the taxi coming in.
We at DodoGo have covered the night drive to hospital separately. A big hospital has several entrances. The taxi rank is not always at the block you need. That is covered in taxi near me in Mauritius.
